Selling (96) Hereford base cows – 90% of these cows will be purebred commercial cows, 10% will be Hereford Shorthorn X, these cows range from 1 st calf heifers to mature cows, average frame size 5 ½, average weight is 1025#, they are gentle, easy to handle, good fleshing ability, feet & udders are good, (64) calves @ press time from 1 day old to 500#, with this said there will be cow/calf pairs, 3-n-1 packages & some splits (there are 3 groups of cows that bulls have been kept out since calving), ideal for receipt cows or take home & bred to bull of your choosing, (5) purebred polled Hereford bulls from 2 to 5-years of age, gentle, sound breeders, & easy keeping bulls, (1) Polled Shorthorn X Hereford red roan bull, 3-years of age, thick w/lots of capacity. Cows have been raised strictly on grass, silage & hay.
Joe & John started in the cattle business in 1937 with (3) cows, later they purchased some registered Hereford heifers & started saving full blood Hereford heifers to build their herd. In 1950 they purchased the grand champion Hereford bull at bull sale in Raleigh that was raised by W. P. Morris of Jackson, NC. Since then they have used Hereford bulls from Kornegay Herefords (Cecil & Karen) of Mt. Olive, NC. In 1995, a roan polled Shorthorn bull was purchased out of Sanford, NC that has been used on the herd to produce these X bred cattle. The Neighbors are having a complete dispersal of their cow herd due to some health concerns of one of the brothers & they will be able to devote more time to their row crops this coming season.
Selling (52) cows that consist of Angus Simmental X, Gelbvieh X, Charolais X & Angus, range in age from 2 nd calvers to mature cows, average weight 1150#, mostly large frame cattle, forages made available to these cattle have been cover crops, peanut hay & permanent pasture, cattle are trained to 1-strand electric fence, 75% of these cows were raised by the James, over the past few years some of the cattle were purchased Wilders Bros. dispersal, Layton Farms, & Ike Jackson, (30) calves on ground @ press time from 1-day old to 350# all sired by Angus bulls, 3-year old Angus bull purchased from Ike Jackson, 6-year old Angus bull from McLawhorn – Winerville, NC & 3-year old Angus bull sired by OT3 bull from E. B. Harris.
The James are having a complete dispersal of their cow herd as they feel they need to devote more time to their row crops.
Selling (28) Angus based 1 st calf heifers, most will be springing close up by sale day, these heifers should develop into real nice good udder cows, were AI-bred to ABS New Design 878 & then put in with Angus bull for 45 days, cattle are very calm & gentle & will produce calves for a long time to come.
Selling (30) head consisting of (5) Angus Gelbvieh X 1 st calf heifers bred to Red Angus bull for early fall calving, (1) Angus 5 th calver, (2) BWF 3 rd calvers, (7) Gelbvieh 5 th calvers, (4) Shorthorn Gelbvieh X 3 rd & 4 th calvers all bred for early fall calving to polled Shorthorn bull, there will be a $50 premium offered above market price for every heifer calf sired by this Shorthorn bull, (8) Black & BWF middle age cows bred to Red Angus & Weherman Angus bull due for spring calving, plus an added attraction (3) ½ to ¾ blood Shorthorn show steers prospects that are thick & with good dispositions, these calves were born fall ’07, weigh approx. 475#, offer a lot of potential for kids to show.
OTHER CATTLE – approx. (35) head from Halifax County, NC consisting of Angus, Simmental X, & St. Gertrudis X bred to Angus & Hereford bulls, due to start calving in March, medium to good flesh, been raised on grass & peanut hay, calves sold off these cows this winter average 600#, also (4) Texas Longhorns bred to Angus bull, owner is selling due to retirement of overseer.
